The eastern Libyan town of Brega has been freed of rebels, Libyan state television said Sunday. Earlier, AFP said scores of rebels abandoned the town amid heavy shelling by pro-government forces.

"The town of Brega has been purged of the armed gangs," the television said, quoting an unspecified military source. The rebels headed towards Ajdabiya, some 80 kilometers away.

Meanwhile, Libya said on Sunday an Arab League call to impose a no-fly zone over Libya was "an unacceptable departure" from the body's charter.
