U.S. President Barack Obama on Friday stated Hosni Mubarak's resignation is the start, not the end, of the transition to democracy in Egypt. "Egyptians have made it clear that nothing less than genuine democracy can carry the day," he said in Washington, D.C.

Speaking just hours after the Egyptian leader relinquished the presidency, the American president said Mubarak responded to his people's hunger for change. But he warned that there will still be difficult days ahead for Egypt as it works toward free and fair elections. He 0a1dded that it was important that Egyptian rights be protected, emergency laws be lifted, the constitution be changed, and that fair and free elections take place.
