Al-Arabiya TV reported on Saturday that a Turkish envoy will bring 'warning letter' to Damascus this week calling for reform and the removal of Maher Assad from positions of power. Maher Assad the brother of the Syrian leader is the commander of Syria's Republican Guard and the Fourth Armored Division. Maher Assad is largely to be behind the three-month old violent crackdown on anti-regime protesters.
The Turkish envoy will ask for Assad to grant Syrians freedom to protest, freedom of expression and to lift the ban on political parties, according to the report.
Turkey is willing to give refuge to Maher Assad or organize refuge for him in a European state and will promise that he will not face trial, Al-Arabiya reported.
