Several thousand people rallied peacefully in several Moroccan cities on Sunday demanding political reforms and limits on the powers of King Mohammed VI. More than 2,000 people took to the streets of the capital Rabat, shouting: "The people want change."
In Casablanca, over 1,000 people demanded: "Freedom, dignity, justice," AFP reported. Demonstrations were held in other cities across the kingdom, including the port of Tangier.
Thousands of young Moroccans have joined the "February 20" movement on the social networking site Facebook, calling for peaceful rallies demanding a new constitution limiting the king's powers and more social justice.
In Rabat, protestors carried banners that read: "The king must reign not govern" and "The people want a new constitution."
Ahead of the protest, Morocco promised to inject 1.4 billion euros in subsidies to soften price hikes of basic products.
