Several Egyptian policemen, including a top officer, were wounded in the Sinai desert late Monday in a gunfight with Bedouins planning to smuggle foreign job seekers into Israel, police said.

Police said the smugglers managed to flee but that seven Nigerian men, a South African man, three Russian women and three Ukrainian women who confessed to seeking work illegally in Israel were arrested.

The police said they also found a cache of weapons and portable telephones equipped to work on the Israeli network. (Albawaba.com)
