The U.S. military said on Sunday a bodyguard of a top Iraqi commander was killed in a precision airstrike, but Iraq dismissed reports the military chief himself may have died in the attack.

Asked whether Ali Hassan al-Majid, a cousin of Iraqi President Saddam Hussein, had been killed when U.S. forces bombed his house in the southern city of Basra early on Saturday, Information Minister Mohammed Saeed al-Sahaf told reporters in Baghdad: "Let them (bask) in their illusions."

Meanwhile, U.S. aircraft bombed a joint convoy of Kurdish fighters and U.S. Special Forces in northern Iraq on Sunday, killing at least 12 Kurdish fighters and injuring at least 45 others, a Kurdish party spokesman said.

Hoshiar Zebari, a senior member of the governing Kurdistan Democratic Party, spoke at hospital in Irbil where the injured were taken but had no details about any American casualties. He said Wajy Barzani, the younger brother of Kurdistan Democratic Party leader Massoud Barzani, was in intensive care but he gave no details of his injuries. (
