Eight Algerian soldiers were killed and three wounded in an ambush by Islamists in the mountainous Medea region, some 90 kilometers south of the capital, Algerian newspapers reported Wednesday.

The soldiers, who were travelling in a convoy taking supplies to an army outpost, drove into a trap laid by their attackers at Montgorno Tuesday evening, Liberte reported.

The attackers set off a bomb as the convoy drove past and then opened fire on the soldiers with machine guns, according to El Khabar

The attackers took the weapons of the slain and wounded soldiers, the paper added. For their part, officials would neither confirm nor deny the report. (Albawaba.com)
