Women who have undergone lumpectomy or mastectomy and radiation to treat breast cancer now have hope of breast regeneration through cutting edge plastic surgery, said Dr. Thomas M. Biggs, Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeon from America, while speaking on the sidelines of 2nd Qatar Plastic, Reconstructive, Aesthetic and Burn Surgery Symposium, held during Qatar Health Congress and Exhibition 2010.

"Through the use of natural stem cells present in fat of our bodies, we can now repair and regenerate the affected parts of the breast. The new methodology in plastic surgery has given new hope for millions of women worldwide, who feel that they have lost their breast after cancer," said Dr. Thomas Biggs

According to Dr. Thomas the procedure of breast regeneration includes taking fat from a part of the body, harvesting the stem cells, so that they can multiply and then injecting the cells into the breast through fat grafting. Women, who have undergone breast regeneration through fat grafting and stem cells, have been able to even regain the lost sensation and the natural contours of the affected breast, claimed Dr. Thomas.

Leading plastic surgeons attending the Pan Arab meet have claimed that fat grafting is also the future for treating many of the severe burn cases and treating war wounds.

A pioneer of fat grafting technique from United States Dr. Sydney Coleman said that the procedure is now used to successfully treat liposuction deformities. "It is estimated that 16 million liposuction procedures are performed in 2010. The deformities are usually visible on the thigh and abdomen parts of the body. Fat grafting can successfully remove the scars and the holes, which usually occur after too much fat is removed during liposuction," said Dr. Coleman.

Delegates attending the meet also addressed at length the benefits of fat grafting in cosmetic surgery. Face lift techniques through fat grafting is now considered more safer and long lasting then silicone implants and complex surgical corrections to the face.
