Syrian Prime Minister Mohammad Mustapha Miro held talks with his Lebanese counterpart Rafiq Hariri immediately after his arrival in Beirut Monday for a day-long official visit, officials here said.

Miro, who was expected to meet with President Emile Lahoud later Monday, was expected to discuss with Hariri the two country's relations, particularly economic cooperation, they said.

The Syrian prime minister's visit was meant to congratulate Hariri's new government, which faces a vote of confidence by parliament later Monday.

Hariri had visited Damascus, the main power broker in Lebanon, last Tuesday where he met with Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.

Miro's visit had been planned to take place after the Hariri government was expected to win a vote of confidence on Saturday, but a prolonged parliamentary debate delayed the vote to late Monday.

The five days of parliamentary debates had witnessed heated arguments over the Syrian presence in Lebanon - BEIRUT (AFP)
