The latest incident involves Patricia Silva, a member from Fairbanks, Alaska, who reported a man shaving in the women’s locker room. The man, who identified as “queer,” was using the facilities in front of a young girl, which Silva found disturbing. Upon raising the issue with the gym’s management, her membership was abruptly canceled.
This is not the first time Planet Fitness has faced backlash over its locker room policy. In 2015, a similar case occurred in Midland County, Michigan, where a member’s complaint about a man in the women’s locker room was deemed inappropriate, leading to the termination of her membership. The company’s policy allows individuals to use facilities based on their self-reported gender identity, aiming to foster an inclusive environment.
The recent event with Silva has reignited the debate over privacy and safety in public accommodations. Silva took to social media to voice her concerns, sharing her experience in a series of videos. She highlighted the potential risks to children and the need for awareness about issues like pedophilia and sexual harassment. Her posts garnered support from many who shared her discomfort with the policy.
In a separate but related incident, Natchez J. Dunlap was accused of indecent exposure at another gym in Anchorage, Alaska. The Alaska Club South, where the incident took place, did not report the event to the police but revoked Dunlap’s membership. It was only after a parent’s insistence that a police investigation began, leading to an arrest warrant for Dunlap.
Planet Fitness’s stance on inclusivity is clear, but the incidents have raised questions about the balance between non-discrimination and the personal comfort and safety of gym patrons.
