ALBAWABA - Photos and clips of a mysterious man, who was believed to be the supreme leader of Iran, Mojtaba Khamenei, during the funeral of slain Ali Khamenei, triggered controversy online, but who is he?

Mojtaba refrained from attending the funeral of his father, former supreme leader of the Islamic Republic, Ali Khamenei, over security concerns amid tension with the United States. The funeral of Khamenei was held across Iran from July 4 to July 9.

Who is Mojtaba Khamenei's lookalike?

Following the circulation of a photo showing a man with his face covered during the funeral of the late Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei in Mashhad, Iranian news agency Rokna revealed the identity of the "mystery man."

According to Rokna, the individual in question is Mohammed Javad Khamenei, son of Mostafa Khamenei, the grandson of the late Iranian supreme leader Ali Khamenei.

Mojtaba Khamenei is Mohammed Javad Khamenei's uncle.

It added that Mohammed Javad was present in Ali Khamenei's office when it was bombed jointly by the U.S. and Israel on the first day of war, February 28, and sustained injuries and burns to his face.
