While the spire and roof of the centuries-old Gothic building entirely collapsed, its main structure and precious painting and artistic works were saved by the efforts of the firefighters who spent hours trying to put the fire out.
Several videos and photos circulated the internet of the heartbreaking fire and the moments when the spire fell off. This comes when Christians around the world are celebrating the Holy Week preceding Easter.
Hundreds, if not thousands, of Parisians looked in disbelief, crowding the streets surrounding the cathedral, cautiously watching the fire while being put out.
People were seen bursting into tears and hugging each other as the historical church was in flames.
One moving video showed people gathering and singing the classic hymn 'Ave Maria' around the cathedral to honor it.

We really don’t know what we’ve got until we lose it. A valuable lesson for all. #NotreDame pic.twitter.com/exvjSOVHml
