Officials in Tehran have warned those suffering from heart or respiratory problems to stay at home or leave the city after pollution hit dangerous levels, newspapers said Tuesday.
The city's air-quality authority said around five tons of lead are now hanging in the choking air in and around Tehran, one of the most badly polluted cities in the world.
"On Monday the pollution meters were all the way up and couldn't even indicate the latest rise in contaminants," the Ettelaat paper said.
Official statistics showed carbon-monoxide levels were up 50 percent since Sunday.
The high number of vehicles in the capital, many of which do not use lead-free petrol, is to blame for most of the city's pollution -- TEHRAN (AFP)
