US Elections 2024: Over 70 million cast ballots in early voting

ALBAWABA - As US 2024 Election Day approaches, over 70 million Americans, about 44% of the 2020 turnout, have already voted via mail-in ballots or early in-person voting.

Experts analyze early voting data for insights, though predictions remain uncertain. Charles Stewart from MIT notes that while early voting shows trends in participation and turnout, it doesn't indicate who is winning.

This year, former US President Donald Trump is competing for the Republican party and facing current Vice President Kamala Harris, who is running for the Democratic party. The 2024 Elections are set for Tuesday, November 5.

The trend toward early voting has grown over 30 years, with 2020 seeing a major increase due to the pandemic, as 69% of votes were cast before Election Day. There is speculation on how voting habits might change post-pandemic. (Photo by AFP)

In this year's early voting, there's been a shift from mail-in to in-person voting, especially in places like Georgia, where 92% of early votes were cast in person. Some states, like Pennsylvania and Arizona, offer only in-person absentee options, which may deter some voters. (Photo by AFP)

Charles Stewart notes that while early voting trends show increased Republican turnout in battleground states, this doesn't necessarily predict the election outcome. Many early Republican voters were previous Election Day voters, indicating fewer GOP votes might be reported late on election night. In 2020, swing states experienced a "red mirage," with initial Republican leads that shifted as Democratic votes were counte. (Photo by AFP)

Early voting data shows over 54% of early voters are women, which Democrats highlight, but Charles Stewart notes that women have consistently been the majority of voters since 1980. The gender gap in voting isn't new, especially among early voters. White voters are more likely to vote by mail, while Black voters often prefer in-person voting (Photo by AFP)

Younger voters, especially those under 25, typically vote on Election Day. Post-pandemic, some early voters from 2020 may return to Election Day voting. The trend of increasing early voting, including among Republicans, is expected to continue as voters seek more options (Photo by AFP)
