After Arsenal defeated Tottenham at the Emirates a week and a half ago, Arsene Wenger smirked in response to a reporter's question about any surprise transfers. One day later, the club announced the signing of German international Mesut Özil from Real Madrid for £42 million.

The signing shocked many. It shocked Arsenal fans because a majority thought all hope had been lost. It shocked Real Madrid fans because, well, Özil was a fan favorite and seemed to be a vital cog for the Spanish giants. It even shocked several Madrid stars, like Ronaldo and Sergio Ramos who publicly expressed their discontent at the sale of the German.

Now nearly two weeks on, the questions continue to arise as to why Madrid agreed to sell what seemed to be one of their key assets. Arsenal midfield man Santi Cazorla is familiar with Özil and has ability, having signed for Arsenal from Malaga just over a year ago. Speaking to Spanish newspaper Marca while away on international duty, Cazorla discussed the Özil transfer.

'I am very happy that Özil is here. He is a spectacular player and we are very lucky that we are going to learn alongside him.

'I don't understand that (why Real Madrid sold him), he is a unique player.

'You will have to ask the club for reasons why they sold them, but at the same time he didn't think he was getting the opportunities he deserved and luckily he has come to us.

'He is an important player and he is going to be very good for the team and the way we play. I hope he can help us fight against the big teams in the Premier League.' (via Daily Mirror)

Cazorla will be ecstatic to see a player of Özil's quality added to Arsenal's squad. The Spanish international has been a huge hit since his arrival last summer, but he's already been linked to a move away from the Emirates with Atletico Madrid reportedly showing interest this summer. The arrival of Ozil, however, will have much more impact at Arsenal than just on the pitch.

Seeing star power like Ozil added at the Emirates will help convince Wenger's current crop of player that the desire to succeed and win trophies is still there in North London. Many believe Ozil is good enough to immediately make the Gunners title contenders now, but if Wenger continues his spending in January and brings in several more top class targets of his, Arsenal could certainly be on the rise again.
