Last season Danny Welbeck scored more goals for England than for Premier League champions Manchester United. However on Saturday, at the Liberty Stadium, he showed his goal-starved fans he still had the goalscoring touch with two goals in a 4-2 victory on the opening day of the season.

For the first, he was in the right place at the right time, to tap in Antonio Valencia’s half-volley from close range and for his second and the winner, he coolly and delicately chipped the Swansea keeper to wrap up a 4-1 victory in David Moyes’ first league game at the helm of the Red Devils.

Welbeck is a forward that possesses everything, both power and pace, and the right amount of ball tricks to get past any defender.

He can operate as a central striker, or a wide attacker and has even been deployed in a deep-lying role under his former coach.

Sir Alex Ferguson knew he had a real gem on his hands when he first gave the Manchester-born striker his debut at the age of 17, and after a loan spells at Preston and Sunderland, he finally broke into the first team at Old Trafford.

Since then he has matured into an England international with six goals in 17 matches.

On a night of high drama in the UEFA Champion League quarter finals last season, Welbeck was picked ahead of Rooney and Hernandez and for 56 minutes, the Reds with their No.19 playing a pivotal role in the game, United had the upper-hand and seemed to be heading for the semi-finals. But the rest they say is history.

He may not be the man that grabs the headlines like his team-mates Rooney and Van Persie, but Welbeck will be just as important to David Moyes this season.
