The German Football Federation (DFB) is set to support Switzerland's Gianni Infantino in the upcoming election to be the next president of world governing body FIFA, top officials said Tuesday.

"I will recommend to the (DFB) council that we vote for the current UEFA secretary general Gianni Infantino," DFB interim president Reinhard Rauball said at a new year's meeting in Frankfurt.

"He's the only one who knows the business from the bottom up. He has already proved that within an important organization such as UEFA."

On Wednesday the DFB council is to confirm which candidate it will back replace the outgoing Joseph Blatter at an extraordinary congress held in Zurich on February 26.

"It is obvious to look at the European candidates," DFB general secretary Helmut Sandrock had said earlier.

"We will announce a decision tomorrow and bring it to the discussion at the UEFA (executive committee) meeting in Nyon on Friday."

Infantino is one of five candidates alongside Sheikh Salman Bin Ebrahim Al Khalifa, president of the Asian Football Confederation; Tokyo Sexwale, a South African politician, businessman and former political prisoner; Prince Ali Bin Al Hussein of Jordan, who was a FIFA presidential candidate earlier this year; and Jerome Champagne, a former FIFA assistant general secretary.

Champagne is the other European in the race along with Infantino but is considered an outsider having left FIFA in 2010.

On Tuesday Infantino launched his manifesto for the election campaign which included promises to expand the World Cup to 40 teams, provide more money to national associations and the confederations and clean up the scandal-hit FIFA.

"He is for me a man of the new generation," Rauball said. "He speaks five languages and no one else is as well connected."
