Al Wasl Football Company has appointed Ammar Awad, a Syrian Canadian, as Sporting Director in accordance to the instructions and recommendations given by the Dubai Sports Councilto all football clubs in Dubai.

Al Wasl continues to make headlines, as it takes significant steps in building a stronger team in preparation for next season, including buying players and strengthening management. This steadfast reinforcement has been clear with the appointment of Diego Maradona as head coach, Ali Hassan as his assistant, and now, with the appointment of Ammar Awad as the new Sporting Director who, with his technical perspective, will add even more value to the team.

“A strong management is the backbone to a strong team and that is why we have dedicated our efforts towards securing individuals who will support the team as they lead us to future championships. We are happy to have Ammar on board for his extensive knowledge and experience that we are confident will be an asset to the club,” said Marwan bin Bayat, Chairman of Al Wasl Football Company.

“Securing a sports director for the club is an important step, as it shows the long-term vision of the Dubai Sports Council, under the leadership of HH Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, and their ambitious plans for transforming football in the region.”

Ammar has been brought on to analyse and dissect current strategies and give advice and counsel for improvement. He will also be the link between the board of directors and the technical team managing the football team.

Ammar’s resume reads of over 25 years of experience both locally and internationally. He has been responsible for setting up management training programmes for various football clubs and for recruiting skilled players. He has had extensive practice coaching for a number of clubs in Canada and Syria, and in Abu Dhabi where he was part of the management team for Al Wahda Club. A former football commentator for many leading sporting programmes on different Arabic channels, he also has experience in sports analysis.

Bin Bayat added, “The club is continuously looking for skilled and talented figures both on the pith and off the pitch to be part of our journey towards victory next year.”

Al Wasl is going through the preparation phase before the beginning of next year. Players will undergo their medicals this month, and training is scheduled to start at the beginning of August when Maradona will officially start his tenure as the leader of the ‘Yellow Panthers’.
