Abu Dhabi's new airport will become operational in 2009 as part of a plan to handle increasing air traffic, an official said.
"The Abu Dhabi International Airport’s expansion is taking place in two phases.
In the first phase, a new terminal is being built and will be ready by August 2005.
“In the second phase, a totally new airport will be built [and] become operational in 2009,” said Dr. Shaikh Ahmad Bin Saif Al Nahyan, chairman of Abu Dhabi Civil Aviation.
“The new airport will [be located] around the same area as the existing airport. The second phase is still [being] planned,” Dr. Shaikh Ahmad said, speaking aboard a refurbished Gulf Air A330 Monday.
