ALBAWABA – Chinese scientists announced the development of an AI model for military purposes, utilizing Meta's publicly available Llama model.
China develops Meta's Llama model
A research institutions linked to the Chinese People’s Liberation Army, the armed wing of the Chinese Communist Party and the principal military force of the People's Republic of China, announced the use of Meta's publicly available Llama model, a family of autoregressive large language models (LLMs) released by Meta AI starting in February 2023, to develop an AI tool for potential military purposes.
According to Reuters, the Chinese army is looking to deploy artificial intelligence (AI) to enhance its defense capabilities.
ChatBIT
Chinese researchers from academic institutions associated with the Chinese Academy of Military Sciences developed a previous version of the Llama model and created ChatBIT, a military-oriented AI tool that collects and analyzes intelligence to provide accurate military information.

Sunny Cheung, associate fellow at the Jamestown Foundation who specializes in China's emerging and dual use technologies, including AI, stated: “It's the first time there has been substantial evidence that PLA military experts in China have been systematically researching and trying to leverage the power of open-source LLMs, especially those of Meta, for military purposes.”
Meta's response to unauthorized policies
On the other hand, Meta, the American multinational technology conglomerate, enforces strict policies that prohibit the use of its technologies in any military applications, according to Reuters.
"Any use of our models by the People's Liberation Army is unauthorized and contrary to our acceptable use policy," commented Molly Montgomery, Meta's director of public policy.
