The Moroccan economic magazine EchoEco, a TV weekly program aired by the national TV channel "TVM", asserted that Morocco is lagging behind in terms of newspapers production and that its journalists are far underpaid. During the program, which was aired recently, EchoEco reported that circulation rates in Morocco are six times lower than the international average. The sales of the 20 Moroccan dailies existing in the market barely exceed 350,000 per day, while in Algeria they reach 500,000 for only one newspaper. As for salaries, according to EchoEco the majority of Moroccan journalists are underpaid with some of them earning less than US$120.
Maghreb Arabe Presse reports that according to the TV report, almost all press companies face serious financial problems and that their main concern is usually just to remain afloat rather than achieve financial gains.
