Is it time for better workers right and labour laws in the Jordan?

General Federation of Jordanian Trade Unions President Mazen Maaytah on Wednesday emphasised the need for a modern labour law that puts an end to unfair dismissal practices.

Speaking at a press conference, Maaytah highlighted the different views that surfaced during the 16th Lower House’s deliberations on the temporary social security law, noting that the federation and workers demanded that the law be examined thoroughly to meet workers’ needs.

Calling for re-examining labour-related legislation, he said the local workforce faced difficulties mainly because the labour market is largely unorganised.

Non-union workers constitute 85 per cent of the country’s labour force, at around 1.25 million.
