The developer of the largest mall in Kuwait, The Avenues in Al Rai Area is using what may be the world’s largest advertising billboard to announce the mall’s imminent opening early next year. Mabanee, the property developer that has gained recent prominence from the high profile project, has applied for recognition for its creation from the Guinness Book of World Records.

At nearly 1km long (980 meters) and with a total surface area of 11,760 square meters it is far larger than a recent billboard built in Dubai, which was a mere 400 meters in length but also claimed the world’s largest status.

The billboard heralds the imminent opening of The Avenues mall, which will be Kuwait’s biggest and one of the largest in the GCC.  Billed as a shopping and leisure destination, the Avenues Phase One has a total retail area of 140,000 square meters, contains the largest IKEA store in the GCC, a Carrefour, Al Shaya Group and other retail units, including some of the most well-known international brands, 10 cinemas, 35 restaurants and cafes .

CEO of Mabanee, Fatma Al-Bader, said it was highly appropriate for probably the largest advertisement in the world to announce the coming of Kuwait’s largest mall: “The Avenues will bring an international standard retail and leisure experience to the community of Kuwait.  Like the record breaking billboard, the Mall will have an enormous impact and will satisfy the growing need in Kuwait for a stylish retail and leisure destination,” she said.

The flex material billboard was printed, built and installed by Alam Al-Tassameem, with the graphics designed by Leo Burnett. It will be unveiled in three stages over period of 6 months (August to February).

The board is designed as part of the mall opening campaign. The billboard is located in Al Rai Area facing the fifth ring road and Al Ghazalli road.  It has been built on two sides of the 425,000 square meter site that will hold Phase One, Two, Three and Four of The Avenues project, with more than 6000 car parking spaces in Phase One alone.

Phase One of The Avenues is due for completion in early 2007, with Phase Two incorporating a further 60,000 square meters retail and leisure space due to be completed in early 2008.  Construction of this started in the Summer, 2006.
