The Brand Owners Protection Group (BPG), the largest non-profit organisation in the Gulf committed to combating counterfeit trade, has strengthened its relationship with the Dubai Department of Economic Development (DED) by conducting a training session with 10 inspectors from the department today, November 3, 2011, to provide skills training in distinguishing between authentic and counterfeit products.

Organised with some of the world’s biggest multinational brands, the training workshop included presentations by representatives from the BPG’s member brands such as BMW, Ford Motor Company, Louis Vuitton, Nestle Middle East, Johnson&Johnson, and Beiersdorf Middle East. The event also allowed the inspectors to gain more insights into these brands and their products, and acquire a deeper look into the various negative impacts of counterfeit goods on society and the economy.

Commenting on the announcement, BPG Chairman Mr. Abdulla Hasayen said, “The Brand Owners Protection Group is excited to have this opportunity to extend its relationship with the Dubai DED through this training event.   We see the Dubai DED as a key authority to address issues with counterfeit products in Dubai and we look forward to continue to work with them towards raising awareness about the damage caused by counterfeited products with the goal of protection of consumers in Dubai.”

This latest training session comes after the organisation announced its plans to fortify its existing partnerships and extend its footprint in the region by forging new relationships during its Annual General Meeting held last month. Mr. Hasayen also called on government authorities for stricter Intellectual Property law enforcement and closer collaborations with brand owners to ramp up the battle against counterfeit trade in the GCC region.
