Dubai Culture & Arts Authority (Dubai Culture), the Emirate’s dedicated entity for culture, arts and heritage, has announced that it will be enriching the library of the General Directorate of Penal and Correctional Institutions of Dubai Police through Dubai Public Library, by providing a variety of books in different languages.

The partnership between Dubai Public Library and the Library of Penal and Correctional Institutions fulfils Dubai Culture’s mandate to spread knowledge among all segments of society and reach individuals across the Emirate.

The initiative is also aligned with the UAE’s Year of Giving 2017 and adopts its three key pillars: social responsibility, collaboration within the private sector, and giving back to the community in a spirit of volunteerism.

Dr. Hissa bin Masood, Director of Dubai Public Library at Dubai Culture, commented: “Dubai Public Library is keen to support Dubai Culture’s social responsibility programme, which significantly contributes to the UAE’s Year of Giving 2017. The Authority is supporting the General Directorate of Penal and Correctional Institutions by providing books that will help to educate prisoners and their children. This initiative is also aligned with the National Reading Strategy 2016-2026, which aims to equip the next generation to excel and encourage youth to embrace a modern vision for the nation.”

The partnership also aims to support people at the Dubai Police Penal and Correctional Institutions, by educating the occupants and instilling them with both moral values and confidence. The knowledge they acquire will be of particular benefit to them once they have served their time and returned to society.

The Dubai Public Library network includes eight libraries for adults and another seven for children. Some branches feature multi-purpose halls, classrooms and exhibition spaces, and all branches of the Dubai Public Library are connected via computer systems. This has established close links with other modern libraries, providing access to vast sources of information on a diversity of topics in both Arabic and English.
