"Robot Government" Sparks global debate after Sensay Island AI state launch

ALBAWABA – Tech entrepreneur Dan Thomson has created an experimental micronation dubbed “Sensay Island,” in which AI systems modeled on historical people such as Winston Churchill, Mahatma Gandhi and Nelson Mandela make government decisions.

The initiative, near Palawan in the Philippines, is being touted as a real-world experiment in AI government. Since the project’s launch, more than 12,000 people have already applied for digital residency, the report from NDTV says.

The AI ‘cabinet’ will discuss ideas, vote on proposals and mimic personalities and philosophies of historical leaders. The goal, Thomson adds, is to see if artificial intelligence could lead to more efficient and more ethical governance than traditional political systems.

The initiative, however, has also drawn strong criticism from AI ethics experts and political analysts, who questioned the democratic validity of a country effectively constructed and managed by a private tech business. Others worried about the perils of letting autonomous AI systems progressively take real control of infrastructure, finance and decision-making.

Even Thomson himself was dubious as to how the experiment would develop in the future. He joked in comments reported by several publications things could get dangerous “if it starts acquiring weapons and attacking neighboring islands,” but admitted he cannot fully foretell where enhanced AI governance will ultimately go.

The project has fast become one of the most controversial AI stories on the internet, blurring the lines between scientific innovation, political experimentation and science fiction.
