Two extremist militants have killed a senior al-Qaeda operative in Syria’s northern city of Aleppo, as infighting among rival foreign-backed groups continues in the Arab country.

Reports said that the attackers blew their explosives up in Abu Khaled al-Suri’s compound on Sunday.

Suri was the representative of al-Qaeda leader Ayman al-Zawahri in Syria and also a co-founder of the al-Qaeda affiliated group of Ahrar al-Sham.

The al-Qaeda-linked Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) is suspected to be behind the attack, reports added.

ISIL has been trying to seize control of the areas in northern Syria.

On February 21, another incident of infighting took place between ISIL members and the so-called Free Syrian Army (FSA) near Bab al-Salameh, north of Aleppo.

The clashes broke out after a car bomb ripped through a crowded refugee camp, killing several people and injuring scores more.

Syria has been has gripped by deadly unrest since 2011. Over 130,000 people have reportedly been killed and millions displaced due to the unrest.

According to reports, the Western powers and their regional allies -- Qatar, Saudi Arabia and Turkey -- are supporting the militants operating inside Syria.
