It could be several years before the world’s heaviest living human being can walk again, with doctors aiming to reduce the Saudi Arabian teen’s 610kg frame by an average 15kg per month.
Khaled Mohsen Al Shaeri, believed to be less than 16 years old, told a Saudi Arabic daily he hoped to become mobile again.
“I am optimistic that I will get better. I hope I will be able to stand on my feet and walk again,” he said according to a translation from Sabq.
The teen’s health was given a boost last week when King Abdullah intervened, ordering he be transferred from his home in the southern province of Jazan, where he’s been confined to his bedroom for several years, to Riyadh for treatment at King Fahd Medical City.
The transfer required more than 50 civil defence and medical staff as well as a crane and special medical bed imported from the US. The procedure attracted international media attention.
Shaeri’s extraordinary weight is believed to be caused by medical problems.
If doctors can successfully reduce it by a rate of 15kg per month it could take more than two years to lower his weight to a still-obese 200kgs.
