ALBAWABA - Egypt has recently witnessed a wave of suicide incidents among young people, and most of these seemed to arise due to failed relationships. With the latest being an Egyptian man who set himself on fire after his mother refused the girl he wanted to marry.

A young man set himself on fire in Egypt after his mother refused to approve his choice of life partner. The story was reported by the Auseem Police Station in the northern part of Giza Governorate, resulting in severe second-degree burns for the twenty-something cleaner.

The victim, identified as Hossam M., was rushed to the hospital, where he was admitted with burn injuries after intentionally pouring gasoline on his clothes and then setting himself on fire. Reports suggest that he had been rejected by his partner's family and he wanted to put an end to his suffering.

The authorities questioned his mother and sister about the incident, and while they confirmed the details, they denied criminal intent and refused to hold anyone responsible.

All necessary legal measures were taken, and the facts of the case were reviewed by the Public Prosecution in compliance with the law. The story shows the tough societal expectations that some Egyptians are forced to deal with and just how destructive of consequences the rejection of love can be.

The incident and others like it show the need for emergency redress mechanisms and counseling services for young people struggling to cope with whatever might be bothering them.
