ALBAWABA - Iraq has been shocked by the latest crime where two underage boys kidnapped and raped an almost 3-year-old girl, local media reported Sunday evening.
According to Kirkuk police, two 10-year-old boys were arrested for kidnapping, raping and killing a girl. The incident took place in Kirkuk's June First neighborhood in Iraq, leaving Iraqis mind-blown.
A three-year-old girl drowned after two children took her to a deserted area and threw her into a water basin, a Kirkuk police spokesperson said in a statement. "The two suspects have been arrested and confessed to their crime," the spokesperson added. A lawyer stated, "The punishment does not include the two children."
On Sunday, July 12, 2026, Kirkuk police spokesperson Amer Nouri Shawani told Rudaw Media Network, "On July 8, 2026, an incident occurred in the June First neighborhood of Kirkuk. Two children, both around 10 years old, took a three-year-old girl to a deserted area with the intention of sexually assaulting her."
Despite the police's statement that the two boys didn't rape her but they did push her into a water basin, leading to her drowning and death, the little girl's father said there was a sexual assault against the little girl.
After being arrested, the two children confessed to their crime.
The 10-year-old boys won't be jailed:
Regarding the legal proceedings related to the incident, Barzo Saeed, a lawyer and consultant at the Erbil Court of Appeals, told Rudaw Media Network: "The two children arrested in Kirkuk are not subject to punishment due to their age."
The lawyer pointed to a law in force in the Kurdistan Region and Iraq, saying: "According to the Iraqi Juvenile Law No. 76 of 1983, anyone under the age of 11 is not criminally responsible and is not subject to the law. If they were 11 or 12 years old, they would have been sentenced, but at their current age, their actions are not considered a crime and they are not punishable."
