The General District Attorney in Damascus has released all artists and scholars that were held captive since last Wednesday’s demonstrations in the heart of Damascus calling for the resignation of the current government of President Bashar Al Asad. Among the captives was Syrian actress Mai Sakkaf, Rima Faleehan and Reem Mashhadi.
Upon their release, captives were subject to harassment by supporters of President Bashar forcing them to seek shelter with their friends and families.
Mai revealed that she and those that accompanied her in prison were tortured by security officials, stressing that despite all that she has encountered, she refuses to leave the country and is willing to risk her life for her cause.
The actress said that she was imprisoned for almost four days and was brutally treated by the police for merely speaking her mind and practicing her freedom. She added that police investigators treated them in a manner that seemed very personal, but stated that all female captives were subject to less torture then males. Mai said that she and everyone that was arrested had gone on a food strike until they were released.
