Saudi Arabia's supreme court upheld its sentence of ten years in prison and 1,000 lashes for blogger Raef Badawi on Sunday, his wife told AFP.

"This is a final decision that is irrevocable," Ensaf Haidar told AFP in a phone interview. "This decision has shocked me."

Badawi, 30, was arrested in June 2012 and ordered to pay a fine of $267,000. The journalist was sentenced to ten years and 1,000 lashes in May, after prosecutors challenged a sentence of seven years and 600 lashes as being "too lenient."

Earlier this year Badawi was given 50 lashes in public for insulting Islam, witnesses said, after Friday prayers near al-Jafali Mosque.
