ALBAWABA- A series of explosions shook the Iraqi Kurdish capital of Erbil on Monday after air defence systems intercepted multiple drones targeting the vicinity of Erbil International Airport, which hosts US-led coalition forces. The incident marks the latest security escalation in northern Iraq amid heightened regional tensions.
According to local security officials, at least seven explosions were heard across the city as air defence systems engaged the incoming drones. Authorities said five explosive-laden drones were successfully intercepted and destroyed before reaching their targets. No casualties or significant structural damage were reported, although thick plumes of black smoke were seen rising from the area surrounding the airport.
Residents reported hearing loud blasts and witnessing intensive air defence activity as sirens sounded across parts of the city. Security forces quickly secured the area while investigations into the attack were launched.
No group has claimed responsibility for the assault. However, the attack bears the hallmarks of previous drone operations attributed to Iran-backed militias operating in Iraq, which have repeatedly targeted military installations hosting US personnel.
Erbil has become a frequent target during the ongoing US-Iran confrontation because of the presence of American and coalition forces at the airport base.
Iran-aligned armed groups have repeatedly used drones and missiles to strike US-linked positions in Iraq and Syria in response to American military operations against Iranian assets and allied groups across the region.
The latest attack follows a series of regional escalations, including strikes on strategic infrastructure and growing tensions over maritime security in the Gulf. It also comes as US President Donald Trump has expressed openness to negotiations with Iran while warning that military operations could resume if diplomatic efforts fail.
The renewed strike highlights the persistent risk of the US-Iran conflict spilling further into Iraqi territory despite Baghdad's efforts to keep the country out of direct confrontation.
