The president of Somalia, Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, has said that Boko Haram fighters have been being trained in Somalia before returning to West Africa. At a security conference in Germany on Sunday, Mohamud argued that the extremist groups were so well organized that the world needed to organize better against them.
Somalia itself is often considered one of the most politically unstable countries in the world, with al-Shabaab militants carrying out multiple attacks against civilian and government targets in the country. The extremist group claimed responsibility for the recent bombing of a plane which took off from Somalia’s main airport last week.
“Without a stable Somalia, the whole region of the Horn of Africa will remain unstable and by and large, the African continent. There are proofs and evidence that [for] some time Boko Haram has been trained in Somalia and they went back to Nigeria,” Mohamud said.
It is not clear whether or not al-Shabaab is still thought to be training Boko Haram militants in Somalia.
Boko Haram, an extremist group in West Africa, has pledged allegiance to Daesh, while al-Shabaab is thought to have links with al-Qaeda.
