Bahrain's King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa was quoted as saying Monday that security agencies thwarted "foreign plot". "The work on this plot lasted for a period not less than 20 or 30 years," the Bahraini monatch was quoted as saying.
He made this statement during a meeting Sunday evening with leaders of the GCC Peninsula Shield forces who were sent to Bahrain to help establish stability.
Earlier, Bahraini authorities asked the Chargé d'affaires at the Iranian embassy to leave the kingdom immediately. The kingdom has already recalled its ambassador in Tehran for consultation. The Iranian government in response has recalled its ambassador to Manama "for consultation."
The decision to expel the Bahrain-based official came due to "interference in Bahrain's internal affairs."
Over the weekend, there were reports that the Iranian diplomat in Bahrain was trying to smuggle an intelligence device valued BD52,000 (about US$160,000).
