‘Race To Dubai’ Takes Off With Emirates
Emirates announced as Official Airline of HSBC Champions
With its globally renowned commitment to sports sponsorship, Emirates, the Dubai-based international airline, announced that is has become the Official Airline of the HSBC Champions 2008 – the first tournament in the ‘Race To Dubai’.
The HSBC Champions, held at the Shanghai Sheshan Golf Club, Shanghai, from 6th to 9th November, has attracted a world-class line-up of golfers, and is the start of a busy year of golf sponsorships for Emirates.
Among the challengers for this year’s HSBC Champions will be title defender Phil Mickelson; 2008 PGA Championship and Open Championship winner Padraig Harrington, 2008 Masters champions Trevor Immelman; two of golf’s brightest young stars in Camilo Villegas and Ryder Cup winner Anthony Kim; Liang Wen-Chong, China’s first winner of the Asian Tour order of Merit and recent winner of the Hero Honda Indian Open; Spanish ace Sergio Garcia and Dubai-based Henrik Stenson
In addition to its partnership with the HSBC Champions, Emirates is Official Airline to a further 10 tournaments during the 2009 season, including the Hong Kong Open, the Australian PGA Championship, Dubai Desert Classic, Malaysian Open, Africa Open, Austrian Open, BMW International Open, Volvo Asian Masters, Hero Honda Indian Open and the Dubai Ladies Masters.
Richard Vaughan, Emirates’ Senior Vice President, Commercial Operations East Asia and Australasia, said: “Emirates is very excited to be part of the HSBC Champions 2008, which has attracted seven of the world’s top eight golfers. From the point of view that our airline is based in Dubai it is fitting to be associated with the opening event of the Race To Dubai.”

During the tournament, Emirates, will be running a number of promotions including ‘spot the t-shirt’ where Emirates cabin crew will be handing out branded t-shirts, should a spectator be spotted wearing the t-shirt by the judges they could win two Business class flights with Emirates to Dubai, including a two night star in Emirates Hotels & Resort’s city-based hotel, The Harbour Hotel & Residence.
Through Emirates’ ‘Closest to the Pin’ competition during the Pro Am, winners will have the chance to win return flights to Dubai, whilst supporting the HSBC Junior Program with charitable donations. Skywards, Emirates’ frequent flyer programmer, will be offering golf fans the chance to win 200,000 Skywards Miles.
