Some 148 people were infected with AIDS in 1999 in the Moroccan southern area of Souss-Massa-Draa, representing 19 percent of HIV-infected people in Morocco, according to Moroccan news agency (MAP).
These cases do not reflect the reality as to the propagation of the disease at regional and national scales, the Moroccan Association of Struggle against AIDS, which disclosed the figures, said, quoted by MAP.
The official statistics are based on voluntary tests by concerned people and on cases declared by chance, the association said, imputing the situation to the lack of awareness and information campaigns on prevention means.
According to the association, some 780 people were infected in Morocco between 1986 and 1999 – (Albawaba.com)
