1938 Horch 853 Special Roadster headlines 2nd Annual Automobiles of London Auction
A 1938 Horch 853 Special Roadster with coachwork by Erdmann & Rossi (chassis number 854268) has been announced as one of the jewels of the forthcoming Automobiles of London auction with an estimated value of £1,500,000 - £2,000,000 (USD 2.7m-3.6m). The event, presented by RM Auctions in association with Sotheby’s, will be held at London’s Battersea Park on October 29th and will showcase over 75 exquisite vintage automobiles for the single-day auction.
Formerly stored in a private Latvian collection, the elegant 853 Special Cabriolet is one of just three surviving examples of its kind, and one of six survivors of all Horch Special Roadsters, making for an exclusive ownership opportunity. August Horch, one of the pioneers of the automobile industry in Europe, started the construction of sporting cars in early 1935, including the 835 Special Cabriolet as part of the second series. Horch established the Horch car brand in 1899 and in 1910 after a dispute with the supervisory board he started up a new operation under the name Audi, the Latin translation of his name. By 1932 the then four leading automakers – Audi, DKW, Horch, and Wanderer – joined forces to become Auto-Union, symbolized by the four rings of the Audi trademark today.
