ALBAWABA - With presidential election preparations beginning in Egypt, a number of politicians announced their bid to join the upcoming presidential race in the country.
The potential candidates' list has been announced as politicians and other famous figures across the country place their bids to join the race, with the constitution requiring for polls to be called later this year, and for the results to be announced no later than April next year.
The Egyptian constitution states that no president can hold a presidential term for more than two consecutive years, with each term being 6 years.
In order for one's candidacy to be valid, it is required for at least 20 parliament members to grant their votes to the candidate, or for a minimum of 25,000 eligible voters across 15 governates across the country with a minimum of 1,000 supporters from each governorate.
Wafd Party leader AbdelSanand Yamama announced his bid to join the presidential race along with Akmal Kourtam, Conservative Party leader, in addition to Ahmed Tantawi, member of the House of Representatives of Egypt.
Diaa Rashwan, General Coordinator of Egypt s National Dialogue, stated that since President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi was elected on 2 April 2018 and his term will expire on 2 April 2024, it is crucial that the procedures for bidding for the candidates and making the announcement regarding the dates of the presidential election take place before 3 December.
Rshwan also added that "at least 120 days prior to the expiration of the current president's term, the procedures for the Egyptian presidential elections should be carried out"
