Palestinian president Mahmud Abbas has accused Ariel Sharon of trying to undermine his authority during the Israeli prime minister's summit with US President George W. Bush.

Abbas stated he was "astonished" by Sharon's "campaign against the Palestinian Authority during (his) visit to the United States".

"Abu Mazen (Abbas) has been elected by the Palestinian people on the basis of a clear programme of political reform and security," a statement from his office said Wednesday, according to AFP.

"He has the full support of the Palestinian people to implement his peace programme with Israel on the basis of President Bush's two-state vision through the implementation of the roadmap."

According to Israeli press reports, Sharon told the Americans that Abbas was fighting for his survival.
