More than 100 migrants on Sunday stormed the border fence, attempting to cross from Morocco to the Spanish enclave of Melilla, AFP reported.

Irene Flores, a spokesperson for Melilla, said a group of about 120 people from Sub-Saharan African countries reached the 20-foot high border fence and attempted to jump over.

"Only 30 managed to get through the whole system and get to Melilla," Flores told AFP, saying they then went to a nearby center for migrants and refugees.

Melilla and Ceuta, Spanish enclaves bordering mainland Morocco, have been a flashpoint for migrants trying to enter the European Union.

Authorities have over the years stepped up security by building a complex system of tall fences with criss-crossing steel cables in between.

So far this year migrants have attempted to storm and climb the border fences 10 times, with about 50 people making it over the border into Spain.
