Afghan militia forces Monday launched heavy ground fire at positions of Osama bin Laden's followers in mountains in eastern Afghanistan, an AFP journalist saw.
From a position on a ridge an anti-aircraft gun fired four or five shells in rapid succession. They were seen bursting high on the forested slopes of the mountain where bin Laden's al-Qaeda fighters have taken refuge.
A Soviet-made T-62 tank took up position on the same ridge, ready to open fire.
The two sides also exchanged mortar fire with a dozen explosions heard between 8:40 am and 10:20 am (0410 and 0550 GMT).
Earlier Monday two American B-52 bombers resumed attacks on the White Mountains around Tora Bora, where the al-Qaeda fighters and possibly bin Laden himself are holed up.
The heavy bomber attacks followed successive overnight raids by US fighter planes. The fighter planes launched at least 10 attacks at around 6:00 am Monday -- AFP
