The German embassy has been granted access for the first time to German-Turkish journalist Deniz Yucel after seven weeks of detention, a spokesman for the Foreign Ministry said on Monday.

Foreign Minister Sigmal Gabriel was informed that German officials will "finally receive access" to Yucel - detained by Turkish authorities on terrorism-related and other criminal charges - on Tuesday, the spokesman said.

Yucel's detention is part of a wider diplomatic row between Berlin and Ankara ahead of a referendum in Turkey that would greatly expand the powers of President Recep Tayyip Erodgan and weaken parliament.

Germany has demanded the journalist's immediate release. Gabriel has claimed that Yucel is being used by the Turkish leadership as a tool in its election campaign.
