Al Azhari and Papantonis Continue Their Chase for the Championship

The Dubai Autodrome has once again enjoyed another exiting day of motor racing with the third round of the UAE's premier motor racing series, the DAMC national raceday held on Friday at the 4.34 km “International Circuit”. The third round saw double wins for Costas Papantonis and Karim Al Azhari respectively in the Motorworks GTI Cup and the Bartercard Gulf Radical Cup. In the UAE National Superstock Bike Championship Craig Muirhead and Johnnie Piennar were victorious.

In the Motorworks GTI Cup, Costas Papantonis captured pole position for the third time this season scoring a best lap of 2:05.436 with a 0.397 seconds lead over Micheal McMullen who took second and 0.936 sec over Yazan Rijleh in third position. For the third time this season Papantonis have managed to clutch an amazing double wins, hence dominating by far the 3 rounds of the season and further securing his championship title. The Greek started from pole position and soon opened a comfortable lead and was able to maintain it till the end of each race. Second place went Michael Mullen in the first race and to Yazan Rijleh in the second. Third position in both races went to Mohammad Al Falasi.

The Bartercard Gulf Radical Cup qualifying saw Karim Al Azhari yet again performing exceptionally taking pole position with a 1.755 sec lead over Bassam Kronfli and a fastest lap recording 1:41.029. Al Azhari have proved once more that he is afar the greatest by achieving a second double win. In the first race Al Azhari beat Kronfli by over 20.962 sec. In the second Al Azhari repeated his excellent performance and beat Robert Simpson to first place while local driver Mohammed Al Owais came third.

Craig Muirhead claimed his second pole position of the season in the UAE National Superstock Bikes with a fastest lap time of 1:50.980 and 0.491 sec lead ahead of Andrew Flint while championship leader Abdul Aziz was third. Muirhead rode brilliantly to a well deserved win and finished the race with a gap of 1.591 over Andrew flint in second and Johnnie Piennar third after starting seventh on the grid. Meanwhile Abdul Aziz who finished 4th in the first race lead the second race until his swerve in the last lap, leaving the lead to Johnnie Piennar who secured his 2nd win of the season. Second place went to Craig Muirhead and third to Andrew Flint.

The next DAMC national raceday will again feature the the Motorworks GTi Cup, the Bartercard Gulf Radical Cup and the UAE National Superstock Bikes, on Friday January 27. Admission for the general public is free.
