US Secretary of State Madeleine Albright held a telephone discussion Saturday with Palestinian leader Yasser over the chances of restarting peace negotiations, the official Palestinian agency WAFA reported.

Albright reiterated a US offer to help kick-start the Israeli-Palestinian negotiations, which have been blocked since the failure of the Camp David summit in July.

The US said it was ready to help restart talks after the postponement of the proclamation of a Palestinian state, initially planned for September 13, while expressing reserve over the chances of an agreement within the next few weeks.

However, time is short on the US side, with the US presidential election of November 7 which will start the period of transition of executive power up until mid-January, on which date US President Bill Clinton will pass the reins of power to his successor -- GAZA CITY (AFP)
