The French Alcatel company has won a Dh185 million ($43m) contract from Emirates Telecommunications Corp (Etisalat) to expand the cable television broadband network in Abu Dhabi and Dubai, reported the Gulf News on Wednesday.

The consortium of Alcatel and Thomson Broadcast System (TBS) will be responsible for the survey, design, installation and commissioning of a full turnkey CATV network of 80,000 home passes.

This will allow E-Vision, the Etisalat division, to offer 100 digital television channels along with fast Internet and video-on-demand to 100,000 subscribers by the second half of the year, said the paper.

"This contract is a very important milestone in the frame of Alcatel cooperation with Etisalat," said Herve de Menthiere, country senior officer for Alcatel – Albawaba.com
