Stemming from its firm belief in equality and in an effort to promote disabled children’s rights,   Alfa, the first mobile operator in Lebanon managed by Orascom Telecom since February 2009, sponsored Sesobel’s “Children Advocating Children’s Rights” Roundtable Event, held under the Auspices of H.E. Dr. Salim Al Sayegh – Minister of Social affairs, at the UNESCO palace on Wednesday 20th of May. Almost 400 people attended the conference among them Senior Representatives from Ministry of Education and Ministry of Social Affairs, representatives from public and private schools from all over Lebanon, NGO’s, associations, and members of the media, academics and human rights activists.

This event came as a final phase of SESOBEL’s “child-by-child” project, which took place throughout the year in collaboration with 9 schools including Adma International School, Antonine School – Baabda,  College  des Freres Maristes – Champville, College des Saints Coeurs Jdeideh, Ecole de Sainte Anne, Soeurs de Besançon – Beirut, Haadath National School, Zalka National school and finally Sesobel.  The participation was very rich as it included more than 700 students, 14 of them with special needs from SESOBEL.

The purpose of the project was to teach children about their rights as outlined in the United Nations International Convention on the Rights of a Child which encompasses the civil, political, economic, social and cultural rights of children. Each of the participating schools adopted an article such as “Right to a Name and Nationality” or “Right to an education” and designed a project around it such as a play, a street campaign, or a song to ask the responsible government and social figures for these rights.

Inaugurating the event was a presentation showcasing the initial phases of the project and how SESOBEL approached the students and encouraged them to “ask for their rights and the rights of every Lebanese child”. Following the presentation, key note speakers included among others Mr. Marwan Hayek – Alfa Chairman and CEO and Mr. Antoine Zakhia representing Minister Salim Sayegh who delivered speeches commending this project.

Mr. Marwan Hayek, Alfa’s Chairman and CEO, explained Alfa’s eagerness to participate in this initiative “This project compliments Alfa’s corporate social responsibility program designed to reach all segments of society.” He added “We are supporting Sesobel both financially by launching a SMS donation campaign and further more by creating awareness on the importance of children’s rights as they are a vital segment in our society.”

Sesobel is one of the social association Alfa supports as part of it Corporate Social Responsibility Program (Alfa 4-Life). This program was created to support social associations and institutions, working in Lebanon, in their humanitarian causes for helping children with communication needs and empowering women.

It’s worth mentioning that “Orascom Telecom Holding” (OTH) is the international leading mobile operator in the Middle East, Africa and South Asia and counts almost 96 million subscribers.
