Algerian President Abdelaziz Bouteflika's scheduled state visit to France has been postponed for 24 hours due to the death of Syrian leader Hafez Assad, the office of French President Jacques Chirac announced Sunday.
Bouteflika, who was to have arrived in France on Tuesday, agreed with Chirac in a telephone call Sunday to delay the trip, Chirac spokeswoman Catherine Colonna said.
"Given the circumstances, and in tribute to the memory of the deceased Syrian president, as well as in a signal of solidarity with the Syrian people in their time of trial, the two presidents agreed to postpone by 24 hours. "The program of the visit will remain unchanged," the statement added, -- (AFP)
