Grade 10 students of Al Mawakeb did their school proud at the Fourth Global Environmental Youth Convention held in Dubai last week, winning two third-place awards for presentations themed on environmental sustainability.
Yesterday, students, parents and senior management of Al Mawakeb’s parent company Academia Management Solutions International (AMSI) turned out in force at Al Mawakeb School in Al Barsha to recognise their hard work – and the unsung contribution of supportive mums and dads.
Addressing an awards dinner congratulating teams who participated in the convention and the students’ parents, Alissar Nasr-Soubra, Chief Academic Officer at AMSI, said: “Student achievement is a team effort and that’s often overlooked. It involves not only the dedication of the students themselves and the enthusiasm of their teachers, but also the guidance and patience of motivated parents who encourage their children to realise their academic abilities. AMSI and Al Mawakeb believe in celebrating this team spirit.”
Held once every two years, the Global Environmental Youth Convention brings together hundreds of the brightest students from around the world to explore the impact of people on the natural environment.
The convention, which is sponsored by the International Institute of Environmental Economics at Sweden’s Lund University, received 500 students from 34 countries in Dubai this year.
The organisers invite presentations from students working in teams, which are the culmination of a year’s study.

Project work exploring issues of environmental sustainability and solutions to environmental pressures are initially assessed online, with only the most impressive submissions making it through to a final round of presentations at the main event.
Four teams comprising 17 students, representing both Al Mawakeb schools in Al Barsha and Al Garhoud in Dubai, took the stage. Al Barsha Girls presented on ‘Consumption and Production’ with the cooperation of Al Tawam Hospital in Al Ain. Garhoud Girls explored ‘Poverty Reduction’ with the support of Dubai Municipality, the UAE Ministry of Social Affairs and the Sheikh Mohammed Charity Establishment.
Al Barsha Boys addressed their peers in a presentation titled ‘Waste’, with the support of JW Marriott Dubai. Al Garhoud boys examined the environmental consequences of ‘Mobility’ with the backing of the Road Transport Authority.
The teams of Al Garhoud Boys and Al Garhoud Girls received third-place trophies at the convention. All competing students and their parents received certificates of excellence at last night’s dinner celebration in Al Barsha.
AMSI CEO Adonis Nasr said: “Winning two awards at an event as prestigious as the Global Environment Youth Convention is a phenomenal achievement – and a tremendous endorsement of education standards in the UAE.”
