The Emirati Victory team's hopes for a world title in the powerboat racing were given a massive boost with the news that the Union International Motonautique (UIM) has reinstated Khalfan Harib and Ali Nasser as winners of the Norwegian Grand Prix held last month in Arendal, Khaleej Time said Wednesday.
The ruling means that Harib and Nasser have clinched the European Championship and have also forged well clear in the chase for the 2000 UIM Class One World Offshore Championship, said the paper.
The Victory 1 crew were furious at being disqualified despite crossing the line, two minutes ahead of Bjorn Gjelsten and Steve Curtis in Spirit of Norway, who were subsequently handed the chequered flag and the precious 20 points, according to the paper.
An official appeal was submitted by the Victory Team to the UIM HQ in Monaco and after a careful deliberation it was decided to restore Victory 1 as race winners.
